The Big Picture Matters — in Websites & in Business
Introduction
This is an excerpt from Delightful Sites — a weekly email series helping therapists, coaches, and entrepreneurs build sustainable, values-aligned businesses, through the power of website marketing. 💐
When I’m working on a website project, I make sure to do this step before pressing ‘publish’:
🔭 I zoom out on every page of the website, so I can get a bird’s-eye view of the design of each page.
When I see the whole page from a distance, I catch little details & patterns that I might miss if I’m close-up.
I get a sense of whether the colors & images are working well together, how the structure of the page is flowing, and if anything looks off. Sometimes, I’ll make a few design tweaks based on imbalances that I see in the big picture. The end result is a more cohesive & enjoyable website (leading to more conversions & connection w/ clients!).
👉🏽 While this big-picture perspective might seem very specific to my web design work, I think it’s helpful to apply a big-picture perspective to our businesses as a whole.
🗓️ THE BIG PICTURE OF TIME
If you zoom out and look at your calendar from the last month, what does the big picture show you?
Did your schedule feel balanced & manageable, or were there too many days with too many back-to-back sessions & no breathing room?
Are your working hours working for you?
💸 THE BIG PICTURE OF FINANCES
If you zoom out and look at your business bank statements from the last quarter, how does the flow of income vs. expenses feel for you?
Do the expenses in your business make sense for you?
(Ex: I use a paid Calendly subscription to schedule intro calls & meetings in my private practice — and it’s worth it to me, b/c it saves me the time & energy of a bunch of back-and-forth scheduling emails.)
Is there a money leak that you can address (like a subscription service you don’t need anymore)?
Is your monthly income supporting your financial needs, or does something need to change in order for your business too feel more financially sustainable?
👁️ THE BIG PICTURE OF YOUR LIFE
Finally, if you zoom out and look at the last 6 months of your life, what do the patterns show you about how you’re spending your time, your energy, and your attention?
(Ex: from day to day, I don’t necessarily notice how much time I randomly waste scrolling on apps — but once I realize that 15 minutes per day adds up to 7 hours per month, that’s a wake-up call for me to be more mindful about my relationship to screens.)
What you value — in the big picture of time, finances, & your life — might look totally different than what I value.
But knowing what we want, and how to get there, always starts with seeing the big picture.
To your success, happiness, & abundance,
Liz
